Fresh IT system allows OperaQ to focus on business

Opera Queensland has facilitated world-class performances of opera and music theatre in Queensland since 1981.

With the support of their key stakeholders, the Federal and Queensland State Governments, OperaQ is opera’s custodian in Queensland – working to protect and enhance the art form and enrich the cultural landscape through innovative and world-class performances.

The Challenge

Five years after their last IT upgrade, the growing and busy OperaQ team were running out of storage, and experiencing increasing issues with their aged desktops and devices. They needed to maximise the flexibility and speed of their internal operations to enable them to focus on their core business of producing opera. Their challenge was to find a solution that took into account their location which is spread across several floors in their facilities in the Queensland Conservatorium building, the out-of-office-hours nature of their work and that key staff are frequently out of office. Following a decade-plus collaborative relationship with Datacom, they turned to us for advice on the best way to meet this challenge.

The Solution

As IT service providers we believe companies should be free to focus on their everyday business activities without having to spend valuable time and resources managing IT functions. As long-time sponsors of OperaQ, we wanted to recognise their meaningful contribution to the arts in Queensland and transition our relationship with OperaQ from trusted advisors to trusted partners.

Datacom recommended the installation of Exchange 2013, Lync 2013 and Windows 8 SOE with Datacom Endpoint Manager as the most functional and practical solution to OperaQ’s limitations. To provide the most holistic approach Datacom also provided new desktops, monitors and laptops to ensure they could maximise the functionality of their new software. We oversaw the installation of a new server which included configuration remotely within our facilities before taking it onsite for a smooth implementation. Datacom also moved from our previous role of providing strategic advice and support to take on complete management of IT Service Desk management, freeing up key staff to focus on the production of opera rather than IT.

OperaQ say the transition and installation process was seamless and has provided them with greater connectivity, reliability and flexibility which in turn has given them back valuable time in their day. The Datacom and OperaQ partnership continues to create operational efficiencies for the OperaQ team.

“An efficient and effective IT platform underpins every area of activity at Opera Queensland. The support provided by Datacom ensures OperaQ is kept up to date and functioning efficiently without draining the precious resources we need to realise our strategic ambitions. Datacom assist us with what they do best, to enable us to do what we do best – provide great opera for all Queenslanders.”
