Real Time Debit is a new way to make online payments. It enables consumers to make one-off and recurring debit payments directly from their bank account rather than using a credit or debit card.

A new payment option for consumers
Real Time Debit is easy and convenient for consumers. Real Time Debit uses a direct-to-bank API so the bank controls the authentication, authorisation and settlement process, rather than a third party. Customers log in through their bank’s user interface. Once authorised, Real Time Debit transactions are treated as "cleared funds" and can be settled into a merchant's account immediately.
Efficient and cost effective for merchants
Merchants have an immediate debit payment authorisation, which means they can continue the online business process to conclusion, including the payment reconciliation to their finance system or ERP. Payment acceptance costs are reduced as Real Time Debit merchant fees are capped.
New revenue stream for banks
Banks gain a revenue stream from these payments where there was previously none, enabling them to invest in making access to their banking systems more open.
