The Challenge
The hospital was reliant on an ageing Citrix thin client environment that was at the end of its life. Complicating the provision of an up to date solution was the lack of local IT support services; this meant the hardware that was supplied was not able to make best use of advanced features usually available in modern thin client solutions.
The Datacom Difference
Datacom partnered with VMWare and Dell to supply one of the first deployments to utilise Dell converged server infrastructure with VMWare VSAN technology in the region. Compared to traditional shared storage solutions, this enabled a user-friendly environment for MHSNQ small IT team to manage, without compromising on performance, redundancy or scalability and continuing to meet the client’s current and anticipated needs.
The Results
The simplified architecture utilises VMWare vCentre to manage virtual servers and virtual desktops through Horizon View and vSphere. Dell Wyse zero clients with PCoIP technology complete the solution to provide a premium end user experience. This less-is-more approach has also resulted in reduced data centre power costs and enabled easy deployment for all thin client users within the environment.
“Datacom was an effective partner, ensuring that the delivery of VDI to the hospital was a success. This has provided a foundation for us to deliver more effective patient services to the North Queensland community. They continue to provide support and advice ensuring the initial solution is able to evolve to meet our changing needs.”
