Building a healthy cloud ecosystem

Using cloud to extend the insurer’s capabilities

Medibank is a leading private health insurer, looking after the health cover needs of more than 3.7 million customers and delivering a wide range of programmes to support health and wellbeing in the community. Datacom has worked on Medibank’s digital transformation since 2015.

Following privatisation in 2014, Medibank began overhauling its end-to-end technology portfolio and IT management system, with the aim of delivering a better service and experience to customers.

The brief was to transform Medibank’s legacy platforms - to better meet the needs of its customers, adhere to emerging regulatory obligations and to ensure capacity to grow in a competitive market.

With our experience both in the healthcare sector and on large scale digital transformations, Datacom offered more than a simple IT management ‘lift and shift’, instead enabling Medibank a quick and effective outcome-based solution.

The first phase was to assist Medibank in its move to a ‘cloud-first’ approach. This included a 100 per cent consumption asa-service contract, with no minimum commitment, and ‘off the shelf’ solutions, not constrained by custom builds.

These projects include a full end user device refresh programme (such as laptops and desktops), the consolidation of legacy infrastructure assets, as well as the development of a hybrid-cloud solution that utilises both private and public cloud facilities, including Datacom Cloud Services (DCS). DCS also includes Backupas-a-Service, full Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service, software asset management and physical asset management.

Datacom is also responsible for Medibank’s infrastructure service management platforms, its service desk and infrastructure support, across Wintel, UNIX and DB.

The five-year project is being delivered on schedule and budget, and is already producing positive results for Medibank.
Now in its second year, Datacom handles 1,500 server workloads with Dev/Test and is planning on migrating 15 workloads per week. Datacom already manages 3,500 desktops, 600 thin clients, and over 2.2PB of storage.

Datacom’s consultative approach has already seen improved efficiencies at Medibank.

A true end-to-end solution; the cloud consumption model ensures that Medibank has a ‘don’t use it, don’t pay’ model, freeing it to focus on developing new capabilities, reducing maintenance or ‘keep the lights on’ work, and allows it to focus on providing customers with a more personalised and proactive service.

“We provided the Datacom team with an extensive brief, and I’m pleased with how they have worked with us in achieving our ‘customer first’ objectives. We have built an open and transparent relationship with Datacom, and I’m confident this partnership will continue to deliver strong results.”
