Datacom is pleased to announce David (Dong Hyun) Lim as the winner of this year’s Datacom Imagine Cup Scholarship. The scholarship offers Mr Lim a paid six month internship working in Datacom’s Microsoft Solutions team in Auckland.

Greg Davidson, NZ CEO at Datacom says, “Imagine Cup is an important initiative to help publicise the ICT sector as a vibrant career path for young New Zealanders. The larger goal is to raise the bar for the New Zealand economy, so it’s important to celebrate the world-class IT talent coming out of tertiary institutions.

The scholarship is a significant opportunity for a student to put their theoretical learning into practice. From day one they’ll be right in at the deep end of designing, building and delivering software solutions.  This is a chance to spend time in a leading company and work on real projects.”

Mr Lim, in his fourth year at the University of Auckland, has a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science and is currently completing a Diploma in Computer Science. Mr Lim was part of TeamDecIM which placed first in its category in the Microsoft Imagine Cup with their solution, Safesleep. The group also won the Best Showcase Award.

Safesleep is a powerful and easy-to-use screening tool that uses a Microsoft Kinect sensor to assess a user’s risk of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) based on the number of times they stop breathing during the night

The solution aims to educate people about the dangers of OSA, increase public awareness of the condition and convince those affected by it to seek medical attention.

Mr Lim says, “I’m very excited by the opportunity to be a part of Datacom's innovative and vibrant team. Datacom is an iconic brand in the IT industry here in New Zealand and has a reputation of excellence.”

Datacom has offered this scholarship for the last three years and every year Datacom hires a large number of graduating students into permanent roles with around 70 graduates joining the software division alone in the past two years.

About Microsoft Imagine Cup:
Imagine Cup is the world’s premier student technology competition. Students compete in teams of up to four people in the Games, Innovation or World Citizenship competitions to create an original technology project from start to finish. The teams create an idea, make a plan, build the project and then compete, giving them the opportunity to learn how to launch their business and bring ideas to market.

Now in its 12th year, Imagine Cup inspires students around the world to innovate across all of Microsoft’s technology platforms. Microsoft worldwide student competition is a truly global competition with around 16,900 students in 11,700 teams submitting 7,500 projects worldwide. This year there were 73 entries in New Zealand from across the country.

The Imagine Cup World Final will be held in Seattle, Washington, USA from July 29 through to August 2 and will be hosted at the University of Washington during TechReady, the Microsoft Technical Conference.
