Beca moves infrastructure to Datacom's Orbit data centre for improved resiliency

The Challenge

Moving from its Auckland Vincent Street address to new premises on Pitt Street was a logistical challenge for Beca.

The move consolidated Beca’s staff into one office, but left insufficient space for it to house its IT infrastructure. Beca’s Chief Information Officer, Robin Johansen, turned the challenge into an opportunity, by opting to move the organisation’s computer servers into Datacom’s state-of-the-art Orbit data centre – thereby freeing up space, but more importantly improving the resiliency of Beca’s computer provisioning.

The Solution

Beca runs an extensive computer network supporting a wide range of services that span civil and industrial engineering, architecture, planning, project and cost management, as well as geotechnical and environmental services.

“Given the complex nature of the business services we provide I was concerned that our existing hardware network would be unable to cope with a sudden crisis – such as a power outage or fire,” says Johansen.

In order to minimise this business risk Beca issued an open tender to data centre providers and spent a great deal of effort in determining exactly what it wanted from its data centre supplier.

“We engaged an external consultant to build our list of key criteria and guide us through the search. When we analysed the responses Datacom’s Orbit data centre was the clear winner.”
